On her way…

There comes a point in every mother’s life when your child travels by themselves for the first time.  With Dan, it was when he went to Colorado to visit my brother when he was 12 (he was escorted on the plane).  With Andrew it was when he went to Washington, DC for a student conference when he was 17.  And today, Cieara is leaving for California to visit my mother.  And I’m a little freaked out (as I was with the other two).

She is flying there – and we can’t walk her to the gate, or make sure she is ok and on the plane.  This is only the second time she’s flown, and she doesn’t really remember flying before.  On the other end, she has cell phone numbers and directions on where to go and where to meet them.  But I think I won’t breathe easily until I get a call that says “I’m with Grandma” (this freakout will be repeated next week when she comes home!).  I try to remember that she is a few months away from 17, and will be ok…but so hard to let them go (she’s been getting a steady stream of instructions, do’s and don’ts for the last two days – to the point where I think we just ended up confusing her!)…

She is very excited about her trip, and my mother has lots of fun things for her to do.  I think it will be great for her to spend time with my family (my sister and nieces/nephews all live in the area) and it will be a good way to Cieara to spread her wings a little.  But so hard for me…sigh.

Like the hat she is wearing?  My mother just knit it up for her and sent it this week (she thought Cieara’s bags would be too full with presents and stuff coming home to fit in a hat – and no, she’s not spoiled at all!).  Larry laughed because as soon as I saw it I said “oh, Noro”.  Knitting geekery, I suppose, to be able to recognize yarn.  But isn’t it a cute hat?  My mother shops at Yarn Lady, and I think it is a store pattern…but I think Mom will give me a copy.  I think it was knit flat and sewn up – but I think it is really cute.  And Cieara likes it so hopefully this winter she will wear it (she usually hates wearing coats, hats, mittens – you know, anything warm when it is 20 degrees out).

We have a busy weekend planned – maybe a minor league game or movies, family, food and golf.  This is Andrew’s last weekend home before he goes back to school so we’ll have some running around getting him ready to go.  Then another busy week at work – and then I’m vacation until after Labor Day!    I haven’t been doing much knitting this week – I was busy reading the last Twilight book so I could give it to Cieara to read on the plane.  But I hope to get some good knitting time in this weekend and next week – and hopefully finish two or three projects that are close.

Have a great weekend!  And please cross your fingers that Cieara gets where she is supposed to go…and that I survive this…

Love the hat and love her hair, too! Sounds like a busy weekend – have fun!

    Cute hat!

I am just as bad with the knitting geekery. Either my knitting group is knitting really common patterns or I have been spending too much browsing patterns on Ravelry because I have been recognizing a lot of their patterns.

My parents sent me to Germany when I was 15. the trip involved an unscheduled stop where we were told to disembark, then reboard blah blah blah. I still made it to Germany just fine! Hope Cieara has fun!

She’ll do fine, but I understand the worrying. No matter how old she gets, she’s still your baby. The hat is lovely and looks great on her.

    Happy Weekend!

I’m sure she’ll do fine…but I know exactly how you feel. My oldest(22) flew this summer to British Colombia…three changeovers and boy was I nervous. He did fine. You can track their flights which is nice…but how do you know if they really make the connections??…..

Love the hat. It’s a different and really cute pattern. The colors look great on Cieara. I bet she’ll wear it all the time 🙂

That hat is perfect for her! Looks great with her hair!

She’ll do just fine, and she’ll have a blast with your fam out here in Cal. Try not to worry – although I suspect that would be like saying try not to breathe… 😉

I said Noro, too. I have socks made out of those colors and I love them. It’s hard to be the mom and let them go off on their own. As nice as it is for us to have the freedom, it breaks my heart that they are grown and not my babies any more.

  8. Opal says:

The first thing I thought of when I saw the hat was “Ooh! Noro!” LOL

Safe journey for Cieara! I’m sure everything will be fine.

Very cute hat! I hope she has fun on her trip.

Hmmm….I think I was in my 20s the first time I flew alone. 🙂 I’m sure she’ll be fine and have a fabulous time, but I can understand the concern.

Honestly “Noro” was the first word that popped into my head when I saw the first photo. Larry must be a fast learner.

Aw, relax! I was on a cross-country bus trip at 17 and look how well I turned out…

    Ok, worry! 😉

  12. adrienne says:

She will be fine! Keeping you both in my prayers.

What a cut hat! Love the colors!

I’m with you on the children taking steps toward leaving the nest — the first of our 5 children is learning how to drive — ugh!

I’m glad that she made it to her grandmother’s house safely. Of course you will worry, but she’s had good parenting.

I don’t know how my parents made it through the three weeks where I took a trip to Europe when I was only 17. It was with a tour group, but still. I would have been a nervous wreck. I dread the time when my kids will be going on a trip. I feel for ya.

  18. Ren says:

i hope that the rest of cieara’s trip goes well. what a cute hat! : )

    (i’m sorry if i double-posted! technical difficulties)

Milestones just come so fast these days! Flying alone is exciting! Congrats.

Looking back, I can’t imaging how my parents let me do so much travelling alone at a relatively early age. I loved it at the time, of course, but as a mom myself now, my perspective is a bit different.

That hat is stunning. Very, very cool.

She has a great face for hats. She looks adorable and warm too. Hope she had fun.
